Edvard Hagerup Grieg

Norwegian pianist, composer of exceptional ability. The best known of his compositions are his piano concerto, string quartette, many Norwegian songs and the famous Peer Gynt Suite. Edvard Grieg also composed three violin sonatas and the Holberg suite for strings.

Ålesund, Norway

Part of my family is from Norway. Pictured is Tore André, my son-in-law with his Norwegian flag. Therefore I think it is appropriate to add the greatest Norwegian composer Edvard Hagerup Grieg to Sheila's Corner. Grieg was born June 15, 1843 in Bergen, Norway and died September 4, 1907 in Bergen, Norway.

Edvard Grieg was Norway's greatest composer of the later 19th century. He was encouraged by the violinist Ole Bull, a friend of his parents, to go study at the Leipzig Conservatory. He was only 15 years old. When Edward Grieg settled in Christiania, now Oslo, in 1866, he was influenced by the composer Otto Winter-Hjelm who knew how the elements of folk music could be used to create national of music. Grieg's rhythmic and melodic elements were borrowed from Norwegian folk music. In 1885 Grieg moved to Troldhaugen where he and his wife Nina lived for the rest of their lives.

Edvard Grieg wrote three Violin Sonatas. The first Violin Sonata was written in Copenhagen where he lived at the time. The second Violin Sonata, written in Norway, where the Norwegian element really entered his music. The third was written in his later years while living in Troldhaugen.

Edvard Grieg skrev tre fiolinsonater.

A beautiful cantabile melody enters here

a folk melody, this is repeated in different keys

        This is lovely
Opens with Allegretto expressivo alla Romanza (that says a lot)
        cantabile singing
this theme runs thoughout the movement

an allegro molto begins with ma poco marcato

          III - third movement:
          Allegro animato - dancelike
